In the colonial period Scituate was a prosperous seafaring town that also included numerous African born slaves. Colonial Scituate listed more slaves than any other community in the former Plymouth Colony. It was whispered for years that centered in the ''Two Stacks'' attic was a well worn whipping post where slaves that had ''displeased'' their colonial masters were chained and whipped.
