Effingham, New Hampshire Ghost Tales Nearly 20 years ago my mother encountered a ghost in Effingham and to this day I look for the little girl when I drive past the tiny churchyard where she was spotted.  On a rainy summer day in the early 1990s, my mother and a friend were returning from the annual trek to North Conway for their summer shopping spree.  As they drove past the tiny old church and unkempt graveyard, they were surprised to see a young girl near the back wall of the cemetery.  She appeared to be no more than 6 or 7 years old, and oddly, unaccompanied.  My mother's first thought was that a parent should not allow such a young child to be playing alone in such a secluded place.  Putting the thought out of her head, Mother and her friend returned home with their treasures and unloaded the car.  After about an hour they decided it was time to go pick up something for dinner.  On the way back past the little church and it's lonely cemetery, they noticed the young girl still in the same area.  Startled, and concerned that she may be lost, Mother and her friend pulled the       car off to the side of the road and walked a short way back to the cemetery.  When they arrived at the gate, the girl was gone, but her doll was lying on top of one of the headstones.  Mother feared the girl may be hiding and in need of help.  The two friends ventured into the graveyard and back to the corner where they had seen the young girl.  When   they arrived at the headstone where they had seen the doll from the road, it was gone, as was the little girl and any trace of her.  Mother looked at the headstone and read the name ''JOANNA'' the inscription indicated that she was about 6-7 years old at the time of her death more than one hundred years ago.  My mother gasped, as her name is also Joanna!  The little girl was gone, her doll was gone, but for some reason she had reached out beyond the grave to catch my mother's attention.  As I said, I still look for her each time I pass by.
