The scariest thing was one night my daughter fell asleep downstairs and when she woke up she swears she saw two red eyes glaring at her. I lived on the 2nd floor and almost daily my dog would go ballistic for no apparent reason and bark in the same spot on the landing. I would hear my door open and close and hear footsteps up to my apartment and I would Call down and ask who is it? And when I checked my door was bolted closed and no one was there. After this happening dozens of times I put a glass ornament on my door that made a distinct rattling noise Only if the door was opened or closed.
