Since there were no cars back then, he had to walk home along the main road. On his way home he stopped to rest on a low bridge by the side of the road. When he got up again, he heard noises behind him.
When he looked back he
saw a funeral procession heading his way. He decided to move to one side and let them pass, when he noticed that they were walking above the ground -

He immediately jumped into the bushes and ran the rest of the way home. When he got there, he was so shaken that he could hardly speak.
