Eldred, New York Ghost Tales I lived in a house on Airport Road, across from Frenchman Field, near the town line between Eldred and Yulan, from 1982-1985.  The house in which I lived had one or more poltergeists.  I would frequently awaken at night to the sound of tapping on the window about a foot from my head.  There were also sounds and lights outside at night.  Those COULD have been pranksters, of course, but I also heard footsteps inside the house, as well as whispered voices.  It sounded like a group of people all talking very softly at once.  The temperature would sometimes drop 20 or more degrees very suddenly. I was also       slapped once on the left ear while I was sleeping. When I turned on the light, I saw a hideous, hunched-over figure, about 3.5 to 4 feet tall, standing in the middle of my bedroom. I have since learned   that that may have been an ''elemental,'' or malevolent spirit. I never actually saw anything other than that, and that was the only time during those three years or so that I ever actually felt threatened. Most of the time, I was just annoyed that the poltergeist(s) wouldn't let me sleep! After a while, the noises and so forth weren't that scary. The woods around the house had any number of piles of stones. This could have been from the time when the woods had been farmland years ago, but I have often wondered if those were old burial mounds. If anyone else from the Eldred area, or anywhere in Sullivan County, has any comment on this, I'd be glad to hear it.
