Lowman NY was the site of a large Indian village prior to 1779. The Sullivan Expedition of the Revolutionary war marched through there on its way north in their effort to destroy the crops that would sustain the British army and the Iriquois nations during their attacks on the Americans. The Battle of Newtown was fought very close to Lowman NY. After that in 1779 the Indians retreated towards the Niagra area and were dependent upon the British for winter
provisions. Just thought I would comment on the history of the area. All along the Chemung River north and south of Elmira were Indian villages. Many
soldiers came to the area and settled after the war.
