My ''incident'' if you will takes place several years ago, I believe it was 2004. At the time I was working for a local inventory company as a ''team lead''. I only explain this because my status allowed me to do certain inventory areas or ''counts'' alone. That being said, the ''incident'' as I have come to refer it took place in a very old, dank building situated in downtown Hagerstown, MD. This building is located about a block away from the newspaper closer to the old Wonder bread store I believe it was. Anyone local should know round about the location.
Regardless, this building in question is or was at that time being used to store supplies to make repairs to public assistance housing in the area, as well as maintenance supplies for local state vehicles. This particular building had an area where the vehicles could be driven into and underground garage. I being a team lead was scheduled an audit early one Saturday morning. This was what we called a ''pen and paper''audit because as a norm we audited retail stores and used the bar codes and scanners to conduct our counts. No such luck with this warehouse, just supplies, doors, windows, nuts and bolts. Every thing counted by hand and written down with paper. Myself being chosen to conduct a solo inventory in the garage, basement area.
All was normal with my day, collected my pen and clipboard with audit information as well as a step ladder to see shelving high above my head. I was shown downstairs and left to my own devices. My first stop, a dark storage area with little more that a 60 watt bulb for light, this area could be described better as a walk-in closet really. Now, what you have to understand is nothing was able to be stored on the floor as per regulations of the building. Everything, stored on wire shelving, thus, floor clear. I proceeded to set up my ladder to start with the top of the shelves and work my way down.
While finishing the upper levels of the closet there seemed to be a very eerie draft that picked up, the kind where your skin prickles and hairs on the back of your neck stand up. I attributed this to being all alone in dark basement as I am sure anyone would. I place my clipboard and pen on the flip down paint can shelf on my ladder to climb down. When I reached the bottom and went to grab my paperwork, I accidentally knocked it off the ladder and sent it flying. Both clipboard and pen hit the floor, the clatter of the board and the distinctive roll of the pen were both audible.
So, down on my hands and knees I went clipboard easily recovered, search ensuing for my only pen. Reminder, floor is clear, a pen on the floor should easily be found. Honestly, it should stick out like a sore thumb. I became angry with myself for not being able to locate my writing utensil, this means I would have to travel up the several fights of stairs back to the office we were storing our inventory cases with supplies. Cursing myself the whole way into that office to grab a silly pen. I was caught talking to myself by the manager of the building which was embarrassing enough.
