I'm a military brat, and the time frame for these occurrences is a little earlier than most of what I've read here. I lived with my family in Courthouse Bay from summer 1969 to summer 1971 in one of the eight officers' houses on the south side of Harvey Street. I won't say which one, so as not to disturb the present residents. The atmosphere of that house was extremely oppressive. I recall never feeling happy there, which was quite different from all the other places I lived. It seems I came down with the flu every six months in that house.
The worst incident happened late in the night or early in the morning in late 1969 or early 1970. The house has three bedrooms and a maid's quarters near the garage. I had a bedroom to myself while my two brothers had the other bedroom, and my parents had the master bedroom. I usually wouldn't sleep in my bedroom as nights there were kind of frightening to an eight or nine-year-old kid, and as my brothers' bedroom had two sets of bunk beds, I'd usually sleep in there with them. On this particular night I had climbed down from the top bunk since it was hot and slept next to my brother in the bottom bunk. I was on the outside facing the center of the room while he was over against the wall.
Sleeping on my stomach, something made me come awake. I lifted my head an inch or two off the pillow to see that something was right next to the bed looking down at me. I quickly lay back down, hoping my acting as though I was still asleep would prevent this thing from attacking me. What I saw didn't look human. I saw a small figure standing there that had on dark pants and a light colored shirt. The thing had a face that was too pointed to be human, and what looked like wrap-around sunglasses on. Remember, this was 69-70, many years before Whitley Strieber's book came out, and at the time all I could think of was that I was seeing some kind of gnome or something. That picture on Strieber's book is the closest thing I've ever seen to what I saw that night or morning. I couldn't see a nose or mouth, as the only light was the moonlight coming through the windows. Nor did I ever hear anything. I lay there in cold sweat wondering what I should do and praying that the thing wouldn't stab me. I saw it for only a scant few seconds before pretending to be still asleep, but I know what I saw. I didn't really want to look at it longer than I did, because I didn't want to see a creepy thing like that actually move. That would've been even MORE terrifying. Finally I got the nerve to jump to the inside of the bed such that my brother would be to the outside of the bed and facing the creature. I pinched the living hell out of him trying to get him to wake up and see this thing. When he did and we both looked out into the room, nothing was there.
I recall even telling my dad at breakfast the next morning that there was a man in the bedroom last night. He believed me, and we went from room to room checking the windows and doors, and all were locked. I saw the same being in the middle of the night in my own bedroom once and quickly put my head under the covers and again pretended to be asleep. Other nights I could hear footsteps on the Oriental rug in that bedroom going back and forth and outside the room. My brothers both had night terrors and would wake up in the middle of the night screaming bloody murder that a man was in the house. One of them even described the man as a little gnome-like figure. Many mornings I'd wake up with a bloody nose.
A couple of more odd incidents in Courthouse Bay: my brother was nearly kidnapped near Marines Road and Middle Street by a Marine in a pink Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, and once in the middle of the night, a woman knocked on the door claiming her car broke down and that her husband had left her and ask if she could use the phone. That may be a normal occurrence in some places, but not at an isolated spot on a military base. Who knows what the source of all this was, but I can tell you I'm not lying. .

Comment by Harold: Wow!! Had something very similar to this happen on Camp Lejeune back in the mid 70s!! Lived in the housing area near the white water tower near a school. Can't recall the name of the street though, same type of gnomish thing, huge dark sunglass eyes as well!!.
