Comment by Anna: I don't know of any Amish people who lived around here (Mennonites yes, but that's recent). However, Craven County was settled by the same German and Swiss refugees that settled Pennsylvania and became the Amish Mennonites. This was in the early 1700s. Perhaps a family lived down that way. There were also a lot of Quakers who settled into North Carolina in the 1700s. I would check with the historical society in Havelock and New Bern (also the library in New Bern) to see if you can find a history of who owned that land. Very interesting!.

I was stationed at Cherry Point Macs in the 1970s. One night while on flight line guard patrol I spotted a strange fog at the far end of the flight line near the Nary facility. I proceeded down the flight line towards the fog. The closer I got, the more a figure started to emerge. The closer I moved, the more it looked like a young woman, just standing in what appeared to be a swamp. At that point I chambered a round in my shotgun and gave the warning to advance and be recognized. No reply. I got as close as 40 or 50 yards, and she just disappeared. I later heard rumor of a young woman many years ago who had become pregnant out of wedlock. Apparently her father had killed her for family shame. I have no idea if that is based on fact or assumption.
