Salisbury, North Carolina Ghost Sightings - PAGE 2
(...continued from the previous page)|
men, women and children. What struck me was that they were all dressed in clothing more appropriate to the 1800s than now. I lowered the window and stopped.
You could hear singing in the distance. It sounded like an old timey Christmas carol. There was kind of an eerie glow surrounding them. Then suddenly it went quiet, and they disappeared as if they stepped behind a hidden curtain. I am sure these were the victims of Sherman's aggression. We drove home silently,
witness to what the northern history books will never publish.|

Comment by Dale: I'm not sure what even drew me to this page today.... But I had the same thing happen north west of that location.
Comment by Charity: I've heard the same stories or something similar to them. But Jerico field is east of the Yadkin River. I think they took the prisoners east, at least that's the way my grannie told it.
Comment by Abigail: I think you may have this confused with another incident. My great grand daddy told me and I was very young at the time about Confederates who were taken prisoner by Yankee soldiers up in the northern counties of North Carolina near the Virginia border.
The war was over and several of the wives insisted on coming with their husbands. I don't remember hearing anything about children but some of the womenfolk may have been with child. I believe the township or area they were taken hostage by the Yankees was called Jericho field.
The reason the Yankee soldiers brought them to Salisbury I believe was at that time Salisbury was a major hub (if one can believe that) and many trains came and went through this part of the state.
They were to bring the Confederate soldiers somewhere maybe to New York. I don't know. What I do know is the rebel soldiers were privy to knowing where Confederate gold had been stashed and that's what the Yankees wanted.
When they got to Salisbury the Confederates escaped. They were captured somewhere east of the Yadkin River and from what I was told not one of them was spared nor their wives. But I do not know where that field is.
I do know it was referred to as Jericho by the locals during that time because it was in reference to their demise at Yankee hands - and they were known as the Jericho slain. However over time it has been forgotten and certainly if there was any paper trail the Union soldiers in time destroyed it.
The area was known to be haunted and no one knows where the gold was hidden the location of the hidden gold died with the confederates. I'm 85 years old and probably one of the few people left alive who heard this story from my very own great grandfather because he and the gents at the time used to talk about the war at a local barber shop which I can't remember it's name any longer.
It's a memory now they are all with Jesus (except the Yankees of course).
Comment by anonymous: Where is Jerico Field?.
