Broadway, Virginia Ghost Tales

As a young girl growing up in a small town, you heard plenty of ghost stories. I recall many times when my sister, mom and cousin would sit and tell of such tales, I was trembling with fear when going to bed, walking out of the house at night or even looking out my window in fear of seeing some horrible ghost staring at me in the pitch-black hours of night. My mom grew up in mook hollow in bergton, I remember her telling of her uncle’s wife passing away, at night he would look out his window and see her walking down the mountain with a load of firewood in her arms, long black dress flowing behind her. When my sister was younger she remembers going to my mom’s home place, right across the road from our house, she was in kitchen when she heard the water come on in the bathroom and there was no one in the house but her. My grandma died in the house in the early 80’s and we often wonder if her spirit roams through the house still. My cousin recalls a time when she was young, she had went to the kitchen in her home in fulks run to get a bottle
for her brother, when she raised her eyes to the window, she saw the ghost of our grandpa, in his casket sitting straight up, white hair flowing and eyes black as coal staring at her.

As a young child, it easy to believe in such horrific tales, but now that I am older I cannot remember one time I ever encountered something unexplainable. I believe
there are lost souls and restless spirits that roam this world, but until I encounter a spirit, I will always believe there is no such thing as ghosts. My children love to hear of the old ghost tales and even on Halloween, it is still our most favorite things to do, sit and talk of ghost stories until the wee hours of night, when it is just dark enough to make you wonder what waits in the shadows beyond the moonlit sky. .
