It didn't stay in my mind too long before something else distracted me, and it lay forgotten.
The event that I remember with the most stunning of clarity happened less than an hour after sundown. The darkness had engulfed the wood, and I had a small light on beside me, made to look like a candle, as I read a book. The first thing I heard was the neigh. It was distant, muffled, as one would expect to hear a horse

out on the road from inside a silent house. Then more horses joined, and I could hear the hooves drumming against the old dirt road. At one
|
point, I thought I could detect the lash of a whip and creaking of carriage wheels, but to be honest, I am not sure - the noise of the horses overpowered it all.
I heard this commotion grow louder, as though approaching, thunder past as though the gaps in the trees had indeed let the sound of a passing carriage grow louder, and then fade off into the distance. I believe now that I also heard the splintering crash
