Then more horses joined, and I could hear the hooves drumming against the old dirt road. At one point, I thought I could detect the lash of a whip and creaking of carriage wheels, but to be honest, I am not sure - the noise of the horses overpowered it all.
I heard this commotion grow louder, as though approaching, thunder past as though the gaps in the trees had indeed let the sound of a passing carriage grow louder, and then fade off into

the distance.
I believe now that I also heard the splintering crash of wood, and the squeals of frightened horses. As far as I know, heard, and can

find, nothing has ever happened on the old road Dickerson. Being young and scared of such things, I never told anyone of this - perhaps I should have searched more before I moved away from the town.
I'd like to discover what's gone on there, in that twisting dirt road Woodland - then perhaps one day my happenings will make some sense. .
