Several years ago my fiancÚ and I rented a house on a large farm outside of Earlysville VA known as the old via farm that had been built around 1843. When we moved in our landlord told us that the house had been a stopover station on the underground railroad before and during the Civil War whci was quite exciting to us.
It was a great old place with five fireplaces and heart of pine floors. But soon after we moved in we realized that we were not the only ones living in the house. It started with doors being found open that were closed and latched.
Then there was the strong impression that you were often being watched whether in the house or being watched from the house when you were in the yard. On occasion you could swear you heard whispers when there was no one else there.|
One night while laying in bed I heard clearly and distinctly a female voice with a deep southern accent say ''who is th'at? '' upon which I looked at my fiancÚ and asked her if she heard the same to which she shook her head yes with rather wide eyes.
We never felt threatened in the house except for the basement which was where there was a stoned over opening I summized was where the runaway slaves came and went. The basement was just plain creepy.
Who knows maybe something happened down there. Just before we moved into our own house a friend visited who said that she was ''sensative'' to spirits. We had not told her about our experiences but when she arrived she said the place especially the front porch was like a busy old time rail station with all kinds of folk! Later when she went into the basement again with no preempting by us she said that the basement was ''bad'' and wanted to immediately leave.
