The Keene Family owned farmland in the area and ran the Mill. Farmer Keene (or maybe it was his son) attacked a man at the Mill one night and was said to be drunk at the time. The victim, mortally wounded, staggered his way up and made his way into a small cabin or out-building near Hidden Pond where he was found dead some short time later. Keene was convicted of murder and sentenced to prison.
During the Civil War, there were many jailbreaks;

prisons being abandoned or overtaken. The prison where Keene was serving his sentence was one of those. He escaped, and I don't believe he was ever caught

and re-incarcerated after the War. This is my best recollection from a newspaper excerpt I read some 10 to 15 years ago. Maybe it was the Springfield Times (?)
I happened to live in the Shannon Station neighborhood, on Huntsman Blvd. And Olde Keene Mill Road at the time. The foundation of Keene's Mill is located in the woods east of the town houses there near Old Keene Mill Road.
The Burke Historical Society certainly would have more information
