West Point, Virginia Ghost Tales | |

I was visiting a friend in Richmond when he began telling me about a phenomenon he called ''The West Point Light.'' I challenged him to take me there at once so I could be sure that nothing could be set up. It took over an hour, since West Point is over 50 miles from Richmond. We ate dinner in town and then at dusk, drove out to the tracks, which he said were only used during the day to move items related to the wood or paper industry. It was an old road that dipped low to meet the tracks. We finally arrived on the rail bed and actually parked the car in the middle. It only took 15 minutes when one of us first noted the light. it seemed to come out of a mist, about 3-4 feet from the track bed, about 100 - 150 feet up the track. The light seemed to have a bluish tint (like a mercury vapor lamp) and raised in intensity and moved slightly. The light was bright enough to reflect off the rails. There was heat lightening in the distance, which served to light up the area briefly so I could definitely verify there were no people holding

the light on the tracks. The light kept moving as we walked toward it and then actually switched sides and appeared on the opposite side of the parked automobile. John and I watched the light for 15-20 minutes until our wives put up such a complaint that we had to move out and return to Richmond. I shall NEVER forget this incident. For the first

time in my life, I saw a phenomenon with no apparent explanation. John told me that he had known about this for years and had come to the tracks as kids, armed with shotguns, to shoot at the light. This was a cowboy version of Virginia and I had no doubts about what John said after witnessing this event. Submitted by Chuck Categories: railroad, lights
It was in 1967, while serving in the Air Force, and stationed at Langley AFB in Hampton VA, that myself and two of my buddies drove to West Point out of curiosity. We had heard a story of the ghost that roamed the tracks. We drove down a dirt road to a crossing. We sat quietly on the tracks at dusk. When it became nearly completely dark, we saw a area of what looked to be illuminated fog draped over the tracks about a hundred yards away. The fog suddenly shrank or collapsed into a bright light about three feet off the tracks. I remember noticing the light reflected off the track rails. After a few minutes the light started coming down the tracks toward us. The

light stopped moving when it was maybe 30 yards from us. So we started slowly walking toward the light. Suddenly, the light went out. When we turned back we saw a police car had come to the crossing to chase us out. Could be the police car caused the light to go out. The patrolman of course said there was no ghost around there. It was one of the freakiest things I have witnessed. I'll never forget it. Submitted by Jeff Categories: lights, railroad
