I had grown up in nearby Williamsburg and frequently heard stories about the famed West Point ghost light. I was always a little skeptical. While on summer break during college (1971) some friends and I decided we would check it out for ourselves.
We went to the railroad crossing after midnight. Some other kids from Richmond were already there and said they had not seen anything. Within about 15 minutes we spotted a very faint light far down the tracks which I thought could be a car headlight.|
The light would blink on for a few seconds and go out only to reappear about 45 seconds later. Each time it got closer. No sound at all. Finally it got to within 300 feet of where we were standing.
It was like a bright welding arc light lighting up our shirts and lasting for only a few seconds. It was very weird. Two friends and I decided we would walk towards the light. As we approached it went out and didn't reappear.
