Top speed may have been 55 mph. To start the motor the key was turned to the 1st position. Then the kick starter was engaged. If the motor started the key was switched to the 2nd position. This turned on the lights.
If the person tried to start the motorcycle with the switch in the second position and the motor didn't start the headlight would get bright but then fade. This appeared to me exactly what the light on the train tracks resembled.
after a few seconds if everyone remained quiet the light illuminated very brightly. On it's own accord after some period of time it would decide to extinguish.
Shortly thereafter it would reilluminate but at a different position on the tracks.|
After it had remained dormant for a few minutes some brave souls decided to walk down the tracks to be closer to where the action was. After all--there is safety in numbers. The light reappeared brilliantly at a distance of approximately 100 feet.
We raced back to the safety of our cars. That was about as close as it came that evening. The light always stayed over
