My grandfather was an engineer for the c / o railroad. Therefore grandpa and grandma lived in a house very close to the railroad yard. In 1945 rail travel was the major carrier of long distance passengers. The first two tracks behind my grandparents home were used primarily for passenger train passage. When old number nine passed by the sight and sound were quite obvious including the shaking of the ground etc.

and I were sitting in the living room, grandmother reading her bible (grandmother very much believed in the spirit world) and I was sitting on the player

piano stool trying to play a song. Between grandma and me was an empty rocking chair. Suddenly grandma said she felt the presense of uncle john, her son and my mother's brother. John had been dead since 1938. The rocking chair between us coincidentally started to rock once maybe twice. My grandmother took the rocking as testimony of john's presence. I offered the possibility that perhaps ''old number nine'' had just passed through and perhaps shook
