I had heard a number of versions of the story and they all had one thing in common... The light. My friend's grandmother began to tell us of what she called the ''real story'' of the haunted bridge. It went something like this:
A young woman had brought her very young baby to visit the local healer as doctors were few and far

between back in those days. After the visit the young woman had to walk back home in the dark. The healer loaned her a lantern to light the way in the

moonless foggy night. She carried the lantern in one hand and the baby with her other arm. As she started to cross the bridge someone in a speeding horse drawn carriage came upon the bridge in such haste that the woman was unable to retreat from the narrow high-railed bridge before the carriage struck her. The woman fell to her death in the water below and the fate of her baby was assumed to be the same by the friends and neighbors who came to assist when
