Having just written a 40 page paper in college six months before CSX railway almost plugged up the tunnel, I have been involved in the restoration of the tunnel since the beginning, actually had to wade through water over my knees to get into the tunnel. There are several spirits inside the tunnel.
One, which I am trying to learn more about, died in the tunnel in the early 1900's as told by locals who remember hearing it from older family members. The story is that a man was traveling in his buggy up what is now known as Old Chattanooga Rd. From Dalton through Rocky Face and just north of Rocky face he was faced with having to cross the ridge.

He heard a train coming north from Dalton and, as some say was common, decided to travel through the tunnel instead of over the mountain. With the train coming north from Dalton, he could follow the train through the tunnel and not have to worry about meeting a train coming the other direction. He took the side road down to the tunnel where he waited for the train to pass. He then fell in behind the train to pass through the tunnel.

The track from Rocky Face runs almost due north/south, then makes about a 90 degree turn to pass through the tunnel. Well, this gentleman apparently got into the tunnel and he either didn't see the red flags on the back of the train or didn't know what they meant. The flags meant that this train, being too large for one engine to pull, had been divided into sections, with an engine pulling each section. This was a common practice in the days of steam as it was not easy to run multiple engines on the same train. With the curve in the tracks behind him, he did not see the section which was following until it came around the bend, and by that time he was already in the tunnel! With only one way out, he started whipping the horse to try to make it to the west end of the tube. He almost made it, but alas the second section caught up with him about 200 feet from the end.
The engineer of the section did not know that anyone was in the tunnel due to the darkness and the smoke left by the preceding train. Suddenly there was a crash as the train destroyed the buggy, killing both the rider and the horse. There have been numerous instances where people have said they have seen two green lights coming toward them as they approach the tunnel, only to have the lights disappear about where the first ''hiding wall'' is located in the tunnel.
