bill was enacted creating the Michigan Asylum for Educating the ''less fortunate''. It wasn’t, however until February of 1854 that the first

student was enrolled, and in the spring of 1854 the school had 12 students, 11 of whom were deaf. In 1867 the name was changed from ‘Asylum,’ to ‘Institution. ’ In 1887 the name of Michigan School for the Deaf was given. 1937 marked the beginning of the State Board of Education assuming the property.
