Alta Vista, Iowa Ghost Tales On our small 107 year old acreage here on the north edge of Alta Vista, we have two apparitions we see on a fairly regular basis. One is a gray cat which we have seen at different times of the day or evening. It is most frequently seen, as it is leaving the room and usually only the rear quarters and tail is seen as it peacefully exits the doorway into another room with a playful swish of its tail. It is usually entering a room which originally was a bedroom, but now is a laundry room. Another is of a young girl of about 9 years old who I have seen skipping through our west flower garden heading north to the barn. In the hay loft of the barn there is a swing that was put up in the last 30 years, and it makes a particular squeak only when 50 pounds or more is applied to the seat. This squeak has been heard by myself and my daughters on several occasions, only to climb up and find no one there. We suspect it is the little girl from the flower garden. Also a gentleman wearing a black suit coat and top hat has been seen in the upstairs hallway.       Not menacing by any means, but just watching. We enjoy our fleeting misty friends and are happy to see them from time to time. Although I do get the feeling that altering the structure of the house or barn may bring about a quite different encounter with the afterworld.... .
