I had no knowledge of the history on the house.
I was scared stiff. Later I asked Tony if he had heard anything and he said he had heard the creaking too. This is a true story.

Comment by Dan: Velma was a school teacher. You said she lived to be about 98 but some think she has never really died. It is said that there was no way she was ever going to go to heaven and that even the devil was afraid of her.
Thus both heaven and hell refused her and simply let her live because neither wanted anything to do with her.

Now this is a true story. I am not one to believe in ghosts, but I have always heard of strange stories being told at the local crematory in town from the old farmers. They all have to do with our cemetery, or should I say cemeteries in town. A little bit of history must be provided for this story. Durant is a strange town in that every three years it moves its cemetery. It was an old tradition started by the German settlers because they had to move the original cemetery due to a factory going up near the local creek that needed the flowing water. Anyway, every three years the town moves its cemetery to uphold tradition. They also say it is to keep the evil spirits at bay.

Like I said, I did not believe in ghost. I have lived in Durant my whole life and have ventured through the current cemeteries, and the old locations. Anyways, something wrong must have happened with the 2000 cemetery move. The locals moved about half the cemetery before a series of rains came through in August. Supposedly the city declared to leave the rest of the bodies at the old location (since the city was getting ready for the annual Polka Fest) and just plow them down to make way for a future corn field. So half the cemetery was moved and the other has remained in the old location forgotten about. Ever since that fateful decision, people driving along old HWY 6 declare seeing apparitions walking across the highway outside of town (where the old cemetery was located. ) It has even lead to several car crashes. Every August 21st which was the day the old cemetery was plowed over, if you go to the old cemetery location, just west of town you will see droves of ghosts crossing the street around midnight. It is rumored that they are crossing the street to find the new cemetery location. While the cemetery and the bodies may have moved, their spirits never left. .
