A gentleman named Tony once owned a livery stable located on the north end of the Main Street of Hancock. There were twelve horse stalls on the right and ten on the left. The end two stalls were filled with hay and straw. Hay was stored in the loft above. As a young youth I and my friend knew every creek, stream, river bend, and alley way around Hancock. It was whispered between us that at night an Indian slept in the livery stable in the hay. The

whispers started when I overheard some adult conversation in the kitchen, but not getting the entire story made it even more than exciting. When in our
|
tours around town looking for excitement we were told by Tony never to go into the livery stable. This did nothing but to reinforce the whispers: an Indian lived at night in the livery stable.
Life went on. Most of the excitement was when Cletus, Jack, and Bob would ride their horses to the south end of Main Street and then race them up the rock covered streets to Everhardt Implement and then turn east. You could hear the horses' hooves pounding the
