Mitchellville, Iowa Ghost Tales

I am a native of Mitchellville Iowa and I have never heard of any of these stories. Never hearing of ghost in a town that I activly ghost hunted in makes me weary that they are credible at all. However Mitchellvill is home to credible accounts such as a girl at the Womans Prison that used to be the Girls Reformatory School which is now the current home of the south cell block- the oldes buildings on the prison grounds. She has been seen by numerous guards and inmates. Clarks lake is a man made lake not far from the cemetery that has been not allowed fushing or hunting since is construction in the 1950s along with the Trailer Court of the same name But there is rumors of a man who fishes in the lake but no mention of words written on his head - that is a gory detail that was added to the story. And Mitchellville has a history of hauntings at Thomas Mitchell Park that anyone from the area would know about. It is the site of a burrial ground for the local tribe that dwelled in the area. They are of the Souix nation and thier burrial ground
is inside of the fenced off area of the park. It is heavily monitored because there are artifacts at the site. There is also a grave in which a man is said to have buried a native child who was horrifically beaten to death by the woman and man who adopted him or her. The cries, in which I have heard, can be heard throughout the park and the rangers
have been called on mumerous times by distressed campers discribing the painful cries of this child only to have no child be found and the cries get more and more distant the moment that you get closer to them. Also warriors are seen in the park on horseback dating to the time in which Mitchellville was settled and the Native driven out. Drums and flute music have been heared as well.

There are many old houses in Mitchellville that containe well known spirits. Three houses in particular have gotten that name. One on Elm street which is known as the ''Under Ground Tunnel House'' or ''Underground Railroad house'' it has an active spirit of an elderly woman as well as the spirits of escaped slaves who found asylum at the house during the underground railroad. This house is documented as a part of the route by the well know Jordan House in Des Moines, Iowa in which there is a photograph of the house and discription of its ammenitites. Another is a house on 1st street which is haunted by a man who is known in the mummy by local children.
The door to the basement has been nailed shut to keep this angry spirit locked away. Previous owners were nearly driven out of thier home because of this man's spirit. Then the house on 3rd street is haunted by a little girl of 1900's clothing. I lived in this house and the town calls it ''That creepy house on 3rd street'' there are many stories that people saw people inside the house when it had been forclosed and abandoned. When I lived there I was tormented by the first owner, a woman seamstress whom an elderly neighbor knew of and got dresses from when she was a child. The woman lives on the second floor and stares at whoever is staying in here room enough to make you feel threatened. That house is one of the most active in the town.
