Washington, Iowa Ghost Sightings - PAGE 3

Comment by Trevor: I used to be one of a large group of teens who would party at Sockum Ridge and nothing happened to us usually about 20 people a night for about a year and a half straight local law enforcement has no issue going up there.
Comment by Ron: I know Sockum Ridge well grew up within 10 minutes of the area. No offense to Trevor but a bunch of drunk loud kids are not exactly paying attention to their surroundings in that state of mind. With that being said, yes there is ''something'' in the Sockum Ridge Woods. I volunteered for 10 years and ''adopted'' upper and lower Sockum Ridge as the areas I wanted to keep clean. Mostly people dumping trash, or as Trevor said kids destroying the place with broken bottles and cans and starting trees on fire etc.
One of the first things we were told by the conservation office and sheriff dept. was to be out of the ridge by dark. Nowhere else in the park systems were we told to do so. In fact one of the younger deputies at that time said he patrolled Sockum Ridge 2 weeks into his service and requested never wanting to again. He said a large black shadow moved slowly in his head lights, and he had a horrible feeling of death and sickness.
The gauges in the patrol car began to go dim and an ice cold breeze blew inside the car on a late June evening. I myself can only say I have seen the red eyes that appeared in the trees and dense woods without light shinning on them, and I have heard the ungodly screaming within those woods. Something does roam Sockum Ridge, and a lot of people have spoken of the horrible encounters they have had.
Comment by Johnathan: Hey all ! Didn't know Sockum was going to be such a hot spot for the unexplained. I have hunted there a handful of times and have stayed overnight in the back of my truck there a couple of times too. The dark can play with your mind a lot and Sockum is no different, but I have to agree there is something out of the normal going on there. I have seen a white mist looking object floating down by the dead pond, and n I know the steam. Fog can rise up from bodies of water, but this was a single body sized figure floating from the dead pond to the timberline about 50 yards away.
I also heard human like mumbling in the woods like real low pitched talking. By the way my cousin works for the law center in the county, and he said if a person doesn't have to be up there at night don't ne. They only patrol Sockum when they are called there, so it's not a scheduled patrol place. I agree it would make a great paranormal investigation spot! I love this site by the way! Hope to read more bout it.
Comment by Samuel: My name is Samuel, and I have a small unofficial paranormal research group that consists of 4 people. Other than our cell phones and military style micro-recorders, we do not use any high tech gadgetry. We find it utterly useless and also find the devices to be a huge distraction while field researching. This past weekend our group did a 2-day research at Sockum Ridge in Washington County in IA. To the point with no added bs Sockum Ridge has at least 3 juvenile spirits (2 boys and 1 girl) and 2 adults.
Something very violent happened there, and we would like to speak to anyone that actually knows the true history of Sockum Ridge, possibly a farmer or an elder in the age group of 85-95 years of age.
We believe the actual tragedy took place in the late 1800s, but the 85-95 age group would at least put us in the ball park of possibly a child at that time might have heard a story from a family member or friend. A hundred percent no doubt Sockum Ridge is haunted! Please contact me with any credible information. Thank you. Samuelcoltons45@gmail.com.

I found out about Sockum Ridge Woods 5 years ago because we also like to primitive camp with tents or just sleeping bags next to the fire. We drive from Cedar Rapids Iowa which is approximately 1 hour drive. The place is absolutely beautiful in the fall. We have camped there 6 or 7 times and usually stay for 3 to 4 days depending on weather. First odd thing about this place is we have never seen another human being while we camped, not one. The other odd thing is no matter what time of year it is we have never heard any normal forest creature sounds like cricket's cicada's owls birds nothing.
