A few miles out of Chester, on the prairie, among the trees, is an old- tumble down house, probably well over a century old. Forty or so years ago, some of my friends and I decided to spend the night in the ruined house. we spread out our bedrolls, shut the one remaining door against the nighttime chill, and settled down in the quiet.
Sleep crept upon us, Then the door flew open with a crash. There was no wind, no reason for the door to fly open in such a way. We again shut the door, this time placing a large rock securely against it. WHAP! The rock whizzed past our heads and hit the wall with tremendous force, broke a hole in the wallboard, and cracked a wall stud. We hurriedly packed up our things and fled. To this day, the house still stands near Chester. The locals can tell you where it stands. A lonely, sagging shell, out of place with the beauty of the shady green paradise. The spring still bubbles, the creek gurgles past, and the cottonwood trees still sway in the wind. But it is not a place to linger. .
