Ghost on 32nd Street.
I don't know the past of this region. Only that it remains a good place to grow pine and harvest it. Out property is 3 miles west of Castle Rock Lake, in an area that would have been very familiar to the Native Americans and no doubt the early settlers. 32nd street between Necedah and New Lisbon is haunted. I don't know what events have transpired here, but they have something to do with the early Indians, untimely deaths and possibly hunting accidents.
Though the region has not real hills or mountains, it does have the nearby lakes of Castle Rock and Pentenwell as well as the rivers that feed them, the Yellow and the Wisconsin. The forests are thick with jack pine and poor oak and some white pine brought in by the timber companies, but the soil does not support trees well. Hundreds of feet of sand are deposited on the surface of the county from ancient inland oceans or old lakes as big as several counties.
Our story begins with the purchase of a log cabin on 32nd street. It was a newer construction, but the ground, I must say, on which it was built is not quite hallowed. There's a ghost here. A woman. She is dark and facely and only visits in the evening or night. She is silent most of the times and tends to either stare at you when you're not looking or just freeze in her tracks in dark corners of the room when you catch her in you sight.
One night during the first few months of making the place our own, as I lay down to sleep in the biggest of the log bedrooms, she visited. I had turned off the lights and was adjusting my vision to the darkness of the room. As I flipped to my side and just as I closed my eyes I quickly felt a presence in the room. That may sound strange, but this was intense. At first I thought it was my wife and without opening my eyes I said ''hello there. Ready for bed?'' With no reply I opened my eyes to find a black figure standing near the bed facing the large window at the foot of my bed. I instantly realized this person was someone new to me, but I had no fear. I felt even some compassion and curiosity and never thought it odd that someone I didn't know was in my bedroom.
As I watched the still form, I thought I should say more and get her attention. I could see her hair was very long but the whole of her figure black as ink, clothes and all. With clarity I thought of the possibilities. An angel, a demon, a ghost... Something else.
