Bristol, Illinois Ghost Tales | |

My sister and I were doing some volunteer work in a set of offices in the small downtown area of Danbury one weekend day. It was the only time we could use the offices and computers and not interfere with regular staff and when we wouldn't be disturbed. When we first pulled around to the side of the building we drove a full circle around and looked up at the windows, we saw the shadow of a man in one of the two back offices and assumed it was one of the staff. My sister and I went in calling ''hellos'' and followed what sounded like a person on the telephone to the back only to find that there

was no one in the room. Needless to say the sounds ended abruptly when we entered the office. We were alone in the offices for well over an hour working yet kept hearing what we took for a radio in another

room or maybe several people talking just out of hearing. After searching the entire area repeatedly and then making certain the offices to the north were empty of people we went back to working in a small room at the back of the offices. Again and again we experienced chills (it was winter and the offices were heated with an out dated heating unit so we ignored this) and the noises. After the last search of the offices which included two closets and a bathroom as well as the two actual working offices we began to hear what sounded like foot steps. We just kept talking and chalked it up to over-active

imaginations. At one point I made a joke about a ghost opening a closet door in the main part of the office several times after I had secured it (I have issues with dark closets being opened a crack after
watching way too many movies as a kid). My sister turned to tell me to stop trying to scare her (which I do often, I asked her later why she looked over at me at that exact moment) when she paled and
whispered for me to get all of the paperwork I could carry and walk to the front door as quickly and quietly as I possibly could. I didn't question her as I have NEVER seen her that afraid and I have
pulled many stunts and told many stories to try to get such a reaction from her. We gathered our papers and walked quickly toward the front door, as we passed the closet the door began to slowly swing
open, I wanted to run but kept thinking about a movie line about not running from anything supernatural because that makes it chase you. Yeah, I know, sounds silly but I was actually saying it over and
over to myself as much as to my sister. Anyway, we got to the front door only to find the dead bolt wouldn't turn. Maybe it was panic, maybe it was something more, but that door wouldn't budge at first,
then when we did get it open we couldn't (and I do mean ''we'' as
in two full grown adult females) get the door to close. I promise you there was nothing physical blocking it. The door suddenly slammed
in our faces hard enough the panes of glass rattled, we locked the bolt and ran to my sisters jeep and locked ourselves in only to find the jeep wouldn't go into gear and the emergency brake wouldn't
disengage!! We were freaking out by then. Maybe it was the slant we had parked on, maybe it was something faulty in the brake or transmission, I'm still not sure. What I am sure of is that when we both
fought the brake we got the handle down and managed to pull away from the building I looked back and clearly saw the shape of a man watching us. No features or colors, just the shape of a man. When the
building was no longer in the rear view mirrow I asked my sister what she saw and all she could/would say was ''it was a shadow.... there was a shadow behind you and we had to leave.... it was a shadow.''
Neither of us have been back to that office.... I don't even look at it as I pass. . Submitted by anonymous
