Manteno, Illinois Ghost Tales


At first glance Manteno, Illinois seems like your normal city, but some long deceased people from yesteryear have returned to this town. Ghosts are so common in this town; a lot of people who live here don’t even fret about it any longer. Some people who live here argue there are no phantoms, but there in fact are terrifying things occurring here in Manteno during the moonlight hours.

A fairly decayed human corpse is rumored to have been made out on several occasions at the entrance to Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor looking scary. A lot of local residents claim this spirit is that of a local who resided here in Manteno many years ago.

A woman burning, carrying a kerosene bottle may be made out time and again in the backseat of a car by the driver setting eyes on the ghost in her rear view mirror before sunrise. Folks who have made out this ghost assert this ghost takes pleasure in frightening folks who have the guts to disturb the silence in Manteno.

The ghost of a young air force pilot has sometimes been made out near Goose Lake Prairie State Park howling at the eye witness to go away. A local person says that this ghost gets pleasure from terrifying folks who come seeking ghosts in Manteno. One thing is for sure, it's a scary ghost that you shouldn't go trying to locate.
