Mount Vernon, Illinois Ghost Tales We lived in Mt. Vernon for 14 years and we had lots of sightings of spiritual beings. demons I am sure. I was glad to move from there. When I was but a wee child, my parents went out there to look at old tomb stones. I was in the car with my mother, being all fussy, when she looked into the mirror and saw a figure in black, right behind the car. Needless to say, my parents refuse to go out there again. I found the location of it, and went out there with my girlfriend, recently. The cemetery doesn't look scary, save that its surrounded by old trees and doctor's houses(which people believe are connected to the occult out there). However, upon going inside the cemetery, there is a 'heavy' feeling about oneself. It feels as if one is being watched from a far. While we were there, we heard people in the woods all around us, as if they were watching and talking about us. A       very cool breeze came through (this was in May, and remember, its surrounded by trees) and then we heard something running back and forth in the woods. We immediately left, not wanting to find out what was there. Dark time is living dead time here. Folks who have never stayed for the night in this settlement will say to you it's all just superstition, but Mount Vernon is jam-packed with undead spirits just waiting to frighten you. These are some of the spooky things that have happened here recently. The ghost of an aged gentleman with a huge gray beard has every so often been observed on a Mount Vernon road at the stroke of midnight. A woman with a spear sticking out of her head is every so often perceived dragging a dead body across the ground in A L Dawson Senior Park late at night. A local resident argues that this spirit is that of a local person who settled here in Mount Vernon before the present.
