My mother brother and his wife have heard someone coming up the basement stairs when nobody was home. They say it is so real they think it's a family member until they Check and no one is there. We experienced     numerous ghostly encounters in our 1870s house while there -- voices saying things like ''mom?'' and ''stay.'' There were also footsteps when no one was there. One night, my husband and I heard very distinct footsteps coming up the stairs and walking on the hardwood floor just outside the bedroom door. Both my husband and I had extreme difficulties sleeping in that house, as did my dog, who later died in the house. We would wake up between 3:00 and 4:00 am every night.
