Waukegan, Illinois Ghost Tales | |

Waukegan, once was an early morning bustling waterway. boat & ship traffic always moving in and out of the harbor. often Mr. Mathon was taking out his tug to catch fish for his restaurant or to help with shipping traffic. Many early morning spring an summer fisherman would witness his tug moving out of the waterway between the coast guard pier and the Saginaw plant at the beach. He would always sound his horn while movin out to the big lake Michigan water. Times changed and the restaurant closed and the tug and its captain moved on. Some mornings though, summer fishermen, will swear they see his tug in the early morning fog and hear his tug's horn sound as it disappears out of the channel to go fishing in the deep waters of the gitchugumee. But that is another Waukegan story, for another time...

The Cemetery on North Cemetery Rd In Gurnee Is known to be haunted. While getting off the bus on the other side of the cemetery on grand ave right in front of The Holiday Inn Hotel, I used to cut across the cemetery right next to the hotel. One morning, I took the short cut of walking through the cemetery and as I was walking I heard voices talking, several voices talking to one another. There was no one in sight and I was the only one who was walking through to get to work. I looked all around but there was no one but me this particular morning and I quickly came to the conclusion that they were the spirits that resided at the cemetery, and I was scared and walked as fast as I could to get to work, never to walk that path again. . Oddly enough you have the photo of Mathons at the top of the page. A certain waitress and patron there was killed in an auto accident sometime around 1983. One night only the bartender there and his friend were

in the building. A dark haired woman and two men came in from the east entrance, waited for drinks and could not get them as the bartender was in another area of the building. They left without being served. When the bartender came back, his friend told him that three people came in from the east entrance but left through that east entrance as they

could not get served. Bartender said that was impossible as both the front doors and east doors were locked. They went to both doors and indeed they were locked.
Out of respect to the dead woman who was a friend of mine, I will not give precise details of exactly how she died. But the bartender's friend gave a precise description of the woman that fitted her closely and remarked of certain scars on her at the location of the cause of her death. . I lived in a home on Ash st. My son was 3 at the time. He always talked about these two soliders who played with him in his room. Being three and seeing as my son was obsessed with becomign a solider, i thought this was imaginary friends.
One day he was playing and yelled playfully ''I', gonna shoot you''. He then acted hurt.. Like he had been yelled at. He said that the Army men told him shooting is no game and that they would go away if he played like that again. He never did.

as the house was in relative close proxcimity to Great Lakes and Fort Sheridan this story really gave me the creeps. . Submitted by Ms. LS Categories: home, boys, soldiers
