I moved my family to Waukegan from Chicago in August 1989 to get my kids away from a traumatic experience that happened to my son who was 9 at the time. He was assaulted on the street while playing with friends back in April.
A 50 year old man chased him and he fell. The man beat him up really bad. He punched kicked and stomped on his back and choked him until he passed out. I arrived home to look for him and his friends informed me of what happened.

When I went to look for him and help him I was attacked by the man with a beer bottle. He could have used the bricks and other bottles and sticks he had near him but he chose a green lownbrau bottle.

I had in my possession an aluminum baseball bat one of my sons friends gave to me for protection. I told the man to not move while I yelled for people to call the police. I looked away for an instant and out of the corner of my eye I saw him lunge at me with the beer bottle.
I swung instinctively striking him in the head. I watched as he fell with a befuddled look of amazement on his face and land on the sidewalk blood streaming out of his ear. I felt at that moment I had killed a man.
I still did not know where my son was at the time I left and went up the street to continue to look for him. I continued my search for my son driving up and down the neighborhood Streets... I turned myself in and spent the next 4 months in the cook county jail accused of 1st degree murder.
