Fishing is a sport that many residents of Waukegan IL. Enjoy at the mile long pier. In its heyday many residents would arrive in the early mornings of july and august to fish for perch, which were plentiful and always a sucess at local friday fish fries. Many persons would see old mr. Mathon and his tug boat leave the harbor for the early catch of the day where it was served up at the mathon fish and seafood restaurant down near the lakefront next to the bait shop and coal yards that were profitable ventures in their day. The rail would bring people from other lakeshore hamlets along the sheridan road line to enjoy the fare at Mathon's rest. Alway packed on fridays.

Residents of the harbor town, and persons that are not native to the town, have reported seeing ''the Mathon Tugboat'' leaving the harbor in the early mornings and also seen by other boating and fishing enthusiasts. The name of the tug is visible on the boat, white on a dark background. The tugboat whistle can be heard as the tug puts out to the lake waters to fish... When it vanishes quickley, some boaters and fishermen have reported its quick dissapearance to the local police, thinking that something had hppened to the tug, since it vanishes so quickley. Sightings have been reported to the coast guard and local police, several times, over the years. - Ghost picture submitted by Thomas

Waukegan, once was an early morning bustling waterway.  boat & ship traffic always moving in and out of the harbor. often Mr. Mathon was taking out his tug to catch fish for his restaurant or to help with shipping traffic. Many early morning spring an summer fisherman would witness his tug moving out of the waterway between the coast guard pier and the Saginaw plant at the beach. He would always sound his horn while movin out to the big lake Michigan water.  Times changed and the restaurant closed and the tug and its captain moved on. Some mornings though, summer fishermen, will swear they see his tug in the early morning fog and hear his tug's horn sound as it disappears out of the channel to go fishing in the deep waters of the gitchugumee. But that is another Waukegan story, for another time... - Ghost picture submitted by Bob Babington
