I lived at Fort Riley from 1974 to 1978. Our Home was on main post on Sheridan Avenue right before the old trooper statue. Our home was about five houses before you get to the Custer house. Our house was just fine, but now and then you'd hear some things that you thought were odd. From time to time I would hear what sounded like boots with spurs walking up the main stair case from the front entrance.
In fact one time I asked my dad why he had gotten home so late. He had no idea what I was talking about, and honestly it really didn't happen very often. My dad actually heard them one night and thought it was me as I had a horse at the Fort Riley stables where I rode. Whomever it was I guess just liked us. Also every once in a great while we would hear what sounded like galloping horses on the parade field behind old trooper. The old historical officers' quarters on main post have a story to tell.

My family was stationed at Ft. Riley from 1971 - 1975 when I was six or eight years old. We lived on Forsyth Avenue on the corner of Barry across from the PC's Residence. One night I woke up to two human hands sticking out from under the bed about a foot apart, palms facing each other. For some reason I wasn't scared. I put my hand in between the hands as if it was a game or something. They started to come together. I moved my hand up out of the way, and the hands made a loud clap. At the sound of the clap I looked up as a female in white nightgown that I thought was my 11-year-old sister was in the doorway to the hall. Her hands were holding on to the sides of the door frame as if she was stopping herself from coming in after rushing over. She turned around and walked away, and I went back to sleep.
The next morning I fully expected my sister to give me a hard time about making noise and waking her up, but she didn't say anything. I brought it up, and she had no idea what I was talking about. Our rooms were set up in those old houses where I had a door that went into the hall and a pocket door that opened to her room next door. She would not have come in the hallway door if I hadn't woken her up. Years later I remembered that one of my friends who would spend the night from time to time said that he was always creeped out about how my sister wandered around the house at night in her white nightgown. I don't think who he saw was my sister.
