We asked what happened and he said that someone went crazy and shot everyone up. There are bloody handprints on the roof where people tried to escape. And the people that were doing construction on it had stopped because too many things were happening in there they were too freaked out to fix it.

Comment by Jdc: Completely mixed up little bits of fact and A LOT of fiction here. It was never an ''asylum'' - it was the original hospital in Harrisonville, then a senior citizens home and at one time mentally ill patients were housed there.
The shooting happened in April 1972 when a man from Chilhowee named Charlie Simpson wanted to exact revenge for a bank loan that was denied to his brother. He parked on the northeast side of Country Club Bank (what was once known as Allen Bank) and as Officer Marler and Officer Wirt (both Hville PD) were walking up the sidewalk, Charlie Simpson opened fire on them with an M1 carbine rifle - killing both.
He then entered the bank firing randomly - there were injuries from shrapnel, but no deaths inside the bank. From there, Charlie Simpson then went west down Pearl St where he shot and killed a gentleman coming out of the dry cleaner's (located across from the hospital) - he exchanged fire with the Sheriff Bill Gough, who was firing from the jail grounds and was wounded in the elbow.
Charlie Simpson then proceeded to take his own life in the street in front of the hospital. My father, uncle and grandfather worked at the bank and all were present the day the shooting occurred - what the younger generations don't realize is that Harrisonville was a much different place back then.
The one thing that is not widely discussed is that Charlie Simpson had the wrong bank to begin with... The loan was denied by GM Allen of Citizen's Bank (what became Commerce Bank just east of the square) - - Allen Bank never was a part of that process or decision. .

I lived on a 13 acre ranch off alley 1. The following events occurred nearly daily. Shortly after I went to bed I was drawn to the mirrored closet door, where my parents installed a blue light bulb as a nightlight.
After they removed it at my request, the light would continue after nightfall for awhile. I would wake to the sound of distant laughing and tapping. I opened my eyes to see children with geometric features at the foot of my bed, after a few minutes they would fade.
