He was always seen when the weather was hot and humid and never bothered anyone. Grandad told me some of the women in his heighborhood considered the bent over spirit to be a bad omen. After the spirit left some of the women would lay chicken bones on their porch to ward off evil spirits. Some of the men would lay something blue on their porch to scare away evil after the spirit was sighted. Submitted by Ollie

I am not a Louisiana native and I lived in Gretna only a short time; July-nov. Of 1984. In mid-oct of that year a friend and I passed through a nicely kept cemetery on Whitney ave. Late at night. We were taking a shortcut but ended up slowing down as we looked about the place.

A long horseshoe-shaped road wound through from entrance to exit with a large mausoleum at the back right corner of the road. All around were individual and family plot markers amid the statues and trees hanging with Spanish moss. We were cutting through from the far back of the cemetery and eventually followed the road around towards the mausoleum which incidentally had lights on inside. Up until this point I had never seen this type of burial building and found it fascinating.
The whole place was fascinating. As we started to pass by this building I looked in through the first door and could see everything quite clearly. It was dark outside and well-lit inside with the yellowish hue of incandescent light bulbs.
