Altus, Oklahoma Ghost Tales | |
|
|
Cypress street is in one of the older sections of the fair city of Altus, Oklahoma. It has beautiful well cared for older homes, and old fashioned street lights that add extra charm to the street. When the month of October arrives and there is rain or fog in the city a ghost can be seen on Cypress street late at night. The ghost is of a man wearing a black trench coat, walking a large black dog on a leash, and you are unable to see the face of the man. He is always seen walking westward and stops under the same street light for about four minutes before vanishing into thin air. This ghostly figure

of a doctor who made house calls many years ago. This nonthreatening ghostly figure is always spoken of in a gentle tone of voice as if in admiration of who he once was. Submitted by anonymous
About four miles west of Altus, Oklahoma is a haunted oil jack or (oil pump). If you look, you can see the oil jack driving along highway 62. Thirty six years ago people began seeing something orange and glowing near the old oil jack at night as they drove along the highway. It is thought to be the ghost of an oil field worker who was killed accidently while the oil jack was being installed into the ground. If

you stop at night in your automobile, and shine a flashlight at the old oil jack, the orange glowing ghost of a man will appear and began floating in your direction. When this happens the really smart
people speed away before the ghost gets too near them. Submitted by Jose
For many years there was an old bus station in Altus, Oklahoma. In the middle 1960's the Vietnam war was going strong
and was the talk of the town daily. Many young military men were seen either getting off a bus there, or getting on a bus. Not long after the Vietnam war ended, the ghost of a young soldier without a
head could be seen lurking around the old bus station appearing to be lost late at night. Some people say they have seen the ghost of the young soldier running down the street in an easterly direction
on the north side of the old bus station. It is said the young soldier is still trying to find his way back home after being killed in the line of duty. Submitted by Jan
The small community
of Humphrey's, Oklahoma has many ghost stories. Before it was torn down there was a haunted house just west of Humphrey's. The old farm house was haunted by the ghost of a man who died suddenly for some
unknown reason many years earlier. According to folks who once rented this house some years later, his ghost would show up in mid summer and stare into the windows of the old house. The family dogs would
bark continually until the ghost departed. It is said the reason the ghost kept returning is because he had buried a considerable large amount of money some place on the old farm. People tried many times
to find the buried money, but it was never found. Submitted by anonymous
The Altus City Reservoir is also haunted by the ghost of a man in his late 20's. With the ghost of this man are the ghost
of two little girls also. Legend says the man commited suicide by driving his car into the reservoir after a bitter divorce in the eary 1960's. When the car was pulled from the water he was still clutching
his two small daughters in his arms. The man was later buried in an unmarked grave at the old Francis cemetery two miles west of Humphrey's, Oklahoma. The only way you can determine there is a grave where
he was buried, is because through the years the ground has settled and there is an indention where the grave is. Submitted by anonymous
