I was in Pawnee in August of 2001 on a business trip. I had gone to pick up some table tops that were being sandblasted at a Pawnee company. When I arrived the table tops weren't ready, so I decided to look around the town. I love touring old buildings and am interested in the history of areas that I visit. I knew nothing of Pawnee, so I was intrigued. There is or was (I don't know if the structure is still there) an old theater on the town square, so I peeked in the windows. However, they were covered up, so I went around the corner turning west and looked in an antique store for a few minutes.

I knew enough time hadn't gone by for the tables to be ready, so I decided to walk down to an empty lot where the walls of a former building stood. I tried to imagine what had been there. Except for the weeds growing, there wasn't anything in the boundaries, so I stepped out and headed back to my van that was parked in front of the antique shop.
I was walking east. To my right across the street standing off the curb was a woman dressed in turn of the century clothing. She had a pompadour hairstyle and a large wide-rimmed hat that was off her head and hanging from a band off her shoulders against her upper back. She was standing there pointing at me and shaking her finger at me as if she were scolding me for something. Even more bizarre is that she seemed to be verbally scolding me, but no sound was coming out of her! My immediate thought was that the ''Town Kook'' was out that day, and I was her target or that there was a Pawnee history day or something of that nature coming up, and she was trying out her costume.

I kind of half waved at her. I had noticed a young woman on the side of the street where I was that was on a ladder hanging some decorations. She was facing me, and the woman across the street would have been to her left side. I made eye contact with the young woman thinking she too had witnessed the silent lady, and I smiled and shrugged my shoulders. It was a split second that I had looked away. When I looked back a the silent lady, she was gone!

There was no place for her to have gone into during the short time I had turned my head. I had the strangest feeling come over me. I couldn't believe what I had just seen. I got in my van and drove west. I'm not familiar with Pawnee or the area, but I ended up (ironically) at the Pawnee Bill Ranch. I turned around in its drive and headed back to town. I asked the people that did the sandblasting if there was a festival coming up that locals would be dressing in period clothing for, and they said no. I was in shock. I didn't tell anyone what I saw. It was so surreal.

Then a couple years later I was talking with a co-worker that grew up in Pawnee. I told him what I saw. He told me that Pawnee has a history of oddities, and when I described the lady to him he just said ''hmmm''. The next day he brought me a photo he had copied of May Lilly. It was her. Pawnee Bill's wife! I had never heard of May Lilly until that day! Truly. I will never forget that experience. I only wish I hadn't looked away. I have since read up on the history of Pawnee and drove through there once with my husband. I finally told him about my close encounter. I think he thinks I'm nuts. I'm not. Just one of the fortunate few that got to experience one of life's great mysteries!.
