My dad was born in 1918 up Number 10 Highway and was raised on the river till he left for the war in 1942. He always told us of a lady that was killed by her husband at a place called Pumpkin Holler. He said that as a teen he would ride a mule into town for a dance on Friday nights sometimes and would have to ride back very early in the morning.
One night his mule stopped at the spot of the murder and refused to move. He said its hair was standing
|
up and that it was quivering. At this time a lady that was all in white came out to him and slowly circled him and the mule. The mules eyes rolled back
|
in its head. The lady walked around them. Then just as suddenly as she appeared she vanished right in front of him.
At this point the mule took off and ran the remaining distance home. He also said that he had witnessed a young looking couple jump or fall from a bluff called Lover's Leap two times. He said they disappeared before hitting the ground. True or not; he died with the belief of what he saw.
