Anahuac, Texas Ghost Tales

Winged captains. Another bit of folklore from Anahuac concerns the White herons that used to frequent the area in abundance and sometimes are still seen. When I was fourteen and doing research for a paper on the Trinity River I was told in a personal interview by one of the elderly locals about how Many once believed that the herons were the reincarnated spirits of old boat captains, and that they would guide those navigating upper Trinity Bay and the River mouth so that their boats did not come to grief on the constantly shifting sand bars and shoals.

This old house. Another ghost Story that I learned during my childhood Summers in Anahuac was one about an old House on the Eastern short of Trinity Bay about a mile or so south of the local hospital.
The House had been abandoned for Many years by the time I came along and with all its paint gone it was the perfect stereotype of the haunted house. Until it burned in 1961 it was said to

be haunted by the spirit of a former occupant who had hanged himself from an ornamental newel-post over the stairwell.
A few months after it burned some frineds of mine and I went to the site on our bicycles and began poking around the ruins. Soon however we got the feeling that we were being watched by very unfriendly eyes so we beat a Hasty retreat
  never to return.

I spent my childhood Summers in Anahuac my maternal grandparents' Home from the mid 1950s to the mid 1960s. During those years I learned a lot of the local folklore including the following: chambersea.
Built not long after tezas gained Independence from Mexico the House of Thomas Jefferson Chambers still stands a short distance North of the courthouse. Chambers was shot dead through a window of the House in 1865 and his spirit is said to lurk within the House still.
An added legend is that the bullet that killed him passed through his body and penetrated his portrait on a Wall in exactly the same spot that it struck him.
