Athens, Texas Ghost Sightings

I have lived in Athens, TX for almost a year now and before I lived in Athens I lived in Malakoff, Payne Springs and Seven Points. It's my belief based on what I have experienced in the years I have lived in Henderson county that Athens is the epicenter of the paranormal energies surrounding Henderson county. When I was 15 I lived in seven points TX on Spring Valley road, a private road near the end of the more well-known gravel pit road. I only lived there for 11 months but quite a lot happened. The house we moved into used to belong to a junk collector and when he moved he left all of his junk behind. It took us months to clean out the barns and sheds.
One day while cleaning the last and smallest shed behind the house I found a strange statue head made of clay. It looked like a mix of a demon and a human. It was rather strange and gave me a bad feeling so I buried the thing. Even after it was buried and grass had grown over the spot I always knew where it was buried and sought to avoid the spot. Even the animals kept their distance. Not too long after that my sisters and I decided to try to get to the back half of the 3-acre property. We got about half-way back to a hill covered in scrap metal and other junk and turned back because both of us became real uneasy. We never managed to work up the courage to go back. On August 3 2003 my dad flew into a drunken rage and killed my mother over a minor argument. Now my dad was an alcoholic and he had a habit of occasionally getting angry but never in all the years I can remember him drinking had he ever raised a hand or any other weapon for that matter toward us kids or my mom.
To this day he still has no memory of the incident. Years later I was talking to my old neighbor from there and he casually mentioned that when he and his wife first looked into moving to seven points they first looked at our old property but passed it over because it gave them a bad feeling. There have been at least three undeniable occasions of paranormal activity since I have lived in Athens. I had heard plenty of stories about the hauntings that plagued this city and the reasons for them but it was not until my roommate from Seattle decided he wanted to look into one of the more famous haunted spots in Athens: fuller's park. I have heard plenty of stories both personal and second hand about the place but I wanted to see it all for myself. |
Armed with a camera and a flashlight he and I left around 5 pm to go exploring. We went to a couple of the more well-known spots in the park and snapped a few pictures. Then he decided to go off the main path. Even though we followed the sun's positioning to determine which way we were going we ended up lost for well over an hour. Along the way we passed a lot of mounds of loose dirt in areas that had obviously not been traveled in years. When we finally managed to find our way back to the main path we calculated that we spent the last hour or so lost in a circle in what is possibly the smallest patch of wooded area in the park. Well we decided to go home before it got dark and take a look at the pictures. On our way back up the main path I kept getting the strange sensation that someone was pushing on my shoulder. |
When we got home and looked at the pictures one main thing stuck out. Even though the sun was high and we were in the open when the pictures were taken all of them looked like they were take in the middle of the night. In the picture of the fuller's graves there were three distinct orbs hovering around the graves and in the background of the picture of the monkey cages there was a pair of glowing eyes. Later that week we decided to take the other roommates back after dark. Instead of taking the main road for fear of getting the police called on us we climbed over a piece of broken fence at the far end of the park. We decided to keep the streetlight directly behind us in order to avoid getting lost in the dark woods. Yet somehow we ended up lost and on the other side of the park when we found our way out. Pushing on we all followed the same path my other roommate and I followed save for the going off path part taking the same pictures in the same order and some extra on the way back. When we got to the monkey cages we all became uneasy as we heard footsteps following us.
