We used to hear noises in the kitchen/dining space and we know it was not mice/rats due to the fact that we had 3 indoor cats. The cats slept with me at night and I could hear the noises in the kitchen with all cats ''accounted for''. My mother decided to exorcise the kitchen one night. She took a can of air freshener and walked around the kitchen telling the ''unknown spirits'' it was time to go and leave the house.
