nor have I ever been confused about the sound of a train. Also, a train from about 500 feet to 1,000 feet away, behind and muffled by the trees, would not have sounded as loud as what I heard. If it had been at the 225-foot distance from the tracks, I would have clearly seen the train, because there are few trees blocking the view of the track from the road in the vicinity of the bridge. The clincher for the sound not being a train is that there are
two private grade crossings for farms on the railroad in that vicinity. The train would have been blowing its horn for both while I was driving by there.
A train horn is louder than the sound of a train—that's why they have horns. I did not hear a train horn that night, and had I, I would have immediately understood it was a train, not a jet airliner.|
