My wife and I bought a small 1950s-vintage house on Houston's mid-northwest side in the early 1980s. One night shortly after we did the closing on the purchase, I was in the house alone, moving some things in, when I felt the overpowering presence of someone. Knowing that the wife of the previous owner had died about a year earlier, I wondered to myself if it was her. I then sensed that it

was, that she was sad about having had to go off and leave her husband and house, but that she was glad that we were going to be making our

home there. In the end, the feeling wasn't frightening, but it was very powerful and unsettling, and I avoided going back to the house alone, especially at night, until after we'd completely setttled in.
