Merkel, Texas Ghost Tales I lived in an old house 2 miles west of Merkel just past Derstine rd. Apparitions were seen of a man. Footsteps running down the stairs, doors slamming, objects would disappeared and heavy furniture would move in the middle of the night. There was also an odor which would come and go. It smelled like a dead rat in the wall. The odor would only be in one small area, it would not fill an entire room nor did it stay in a particular spot. I wonder if it is not the same house as ''Ashley'' is talking about. There was a window on the second floor which I never felt comfortable about. I was always uneasy about looking towards it.
