  A few weeks after beginning my first real job out of college, my little dog, Hagar, would occasionally halt his usual frenzied greeting when I returned  
  home from work. Instead he would stop in his tracks and just stare at me with hesitancy and perhaps a little fear. I'd just call his name, and he'd snap  
  out of it and be just as excited to see me as always.

Eventually I learned that the previous occupant of my office, Mac, had committed suicide.
  Further, my supervisor, Lonnie, told me of how her 4-year-old son stopped one evening in their hallway connecting the bathroom with his bedroom. When  
  asked why he stopped the boy answered, ''Uncle Mac (is) in the way. Don't you see Uncle Mac? Why are his eyes black?''

Lonnie saw nothing but played
  her son's game and asked Mac to step aside. The boy bounced into bed without further delay. On her way out Lonnie whispered toward Mac's last known position  
  that he was not welcome in her home.

So the next time Hagar acted weird toward me, I spun around and said, ''Mac, I am happy to hang out with you
