The Last Game at Toyah High by Daniel Parks
The morning sky lay thick and gray, upon the Texas plains. While northern winds commenced to blow, and mingled dust with rain. Throughout the day I’d venture out, rebuffed by cold, wet winds. But not too long and I’d return, warmed by the fire again.
I’ve walked the streets of Toyah, Texas, so many times before. Drawn by the relics

of her past, and of her railroad lore. But on this cold November eve, a strangeness filled the wind. And I moved closer to the fire, deciding
|
to stay in.
Around mid-night, I can’t be sure, a mournful whistle blew. And from my slumber I awoke, this sound I surely knew. An old steam train not too far off, on this cold winter’s night. Sent shivers moving up my spine, and giving me a fright.
I layed there quiet in my bed, my senses sure and keen. Was it the wind bedeviling me, or was it just a dream. The darkness ‘round me, cold
